China Plans to Expand Affordable Childcare and Pediatric Healthcare Services

Phoenix News — China will continue efforts to create a more birth-friendly environment by expanding affordable childcare and pediatric healthcare services, Lei Haichao, Minister of the National Health Commission, said on September 14.

At a State Council Information Office press conference, Lei said China will promote the integrated development of childcare and preschool services. He added that communities and employers will be encouraged to offer childcare facilities — making services more affordable and accessible for families, boosting enrollment, and reducing child-rearing and education costs.

Lei said China will add more than 1,000 community health centers and township hospitals offering pediatric services this year. By the end of 2026, more than 95 percent of township hospitals and community health centers are expected to provide pediatric care. This year, China has also deployed 3,100 pediatricians to primary-level medical institutions to strengthen pediatric services at the community level.
